Generative AI has taken the boardroom by storm over the past few years. Today almost every organisation is experimenting with copilots, chatbots and AI-driven assistants. Yet for many CIOs and CTOs in Belgium and the Netherlands, the same question remains: how do we move from clever answers to controlled actions within real business processes?
The market is moving fast. Where AI today mostly helps generate content, insights and analyses, a new phase is emerging in which AI doesn't just advise, it acts: Agentic AI.
It is a new phase in which AI doesn't simply respond to a prompt, but helps achieve business goals by steering systems, retrieving information, carrying out actions and working together with people and other AI agents.
Not a chatbot with a job title, but a controlled software component that translates goals into actions within predefined boundaries.
Analysts expect Agentic AI to find its way into enterprise software and operational IT environments more and more over the coming years. At the same time, it is becoming clear that autonomy without sufficient control mechanisms introduces new risks around security, cost control and operational stability. That is the challenge many organisations now face: not the question of whether Agentic AI will break through, but how to deploy this technology safely, manageably and at scale.
That challenge is why we started the AI Agentic Lab at Harmony. Not an experimental playground, but an environment where we work with clients to explore how AI agents can be safely integrated into existing processes, systems and architectures. The goal: to narrow the gap between a promising pilot and a production-ready solution. And, not to be forgotten, to show what investment that involves. Because the business model of AI tooling is knocking at the door, and its prices are fluctuating quite a bit at the moment. That is why, in the AI Agentic Lab, we map out the costs of a first MVP or POC carefully.
The gap in the Benelux: from pilot to production
The challenge in Belgium and the Netherlands is no longer generating interest in AI. The interest is clearly there.
The real gap lies between experimenting and operationalising.
Local market research shows that many organisations now have AI strategies and pilots, but that only a limited share actually run AI at scale in production. A lack of specialist integration expertise and complex governance questions are consistently cited as the biggest obstacles to further adoption.
The Harmony AI Agentic Lab focuses on precisely that intersection of AI, integration, architecture and governance. Not by starting from technology alone, but from concrete business processes and measurable business value.
The shift from task-driven to goal-driven
Traditional automation is task-driven. You define in advance which steps need to be carried out and in what order. An AI agent works in a fundamentally different way: instead of a task, the agent is given a goal.
For example: "Reduce the turnaround time of customer files by 15%."
To reach that goal, the agent can analyse process information, identify missing data, consult relevant systems and propose or carry out next steps. Think of an HR agent that, once a contract is signed, independently assigns IT access rights, orders hardware and sets up an onboarding schedule.
Not every step needs to be fully autonomous straight away. In mature agentic architectures, autonomy is built up step by step:
- Assistive Agent: advises and suggests actions; the human decides.
- Supervised Agent: prepares actions; the human approves before execution.
- Bounded Execution Agent: carries out low-risk tasks independently within predefined limits.
- Orchestrated Multi-Agent Process: coordinates activities across multiple systems, with continuous monitoring and escalation.
For IT leaders, this means a shift from software that only reacts to input towards intelligent execution layers that actively contribute to business objectives.
The real challenge is not just AI, but integration too
Demonstrating a working AI agent has become relatively easy. The real challenge begins when an agent needs access to business-critical systems and up-to-date data. That is where complex questions come up:
- Which datasets is the agent allowed to use?
- What rights does it get in the ERP or CRM system?
- How do we prevent an agent from operating beyond its authority?
An AI agent without access to the right systems remains, in the end, a smart conversation partner. Real business value only emerges when AI can read, write and act in a controlled way within operational reality.
That is why, within Harmony IT, we build on years of expertise. With technologies such as MuleSoft, Frends, Oracle and OutSystems we connect agents to the systems behind them, so they can carry out actions in a controlled way. Agentic AI then becomes not a separate technology, but a powerful extension of your existing application landscape.
RAG: from model knowledge to business knowledge
Public AI models do not have your internal documents, policies or contractual agreements. That is why many enterprise AI solutions are built on Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).
With RAG, an agent gets controlled access to relevant business information at exactly the moment it is needed. This makes the output better substantiated, traceable to sources and grounded in validated business information, which can significantly reduce the risk of hallucinations.
From separate agents to a controlled ecosystem
In practice, a process is rarely handled by a single agent. More and more often we see specialised agents working together, such as a service agent for customer questions, an integration agent for retrieving data and a compliance agent for checks.
Together they form an ecosystem in which responsibilities are divided. Human-in-the-loop remains essential. Not because the technology falls short, but because context, accountability and strategic judgement require human oversight.
Governance doesn't have to be a brake on innovation
As AI gets more autonomy, governance becomes more important. For organisations operating under the strict rules of the GDPR and the gradually introduced European AI Act, it is an absolute precondition.
That is why, within the Harmony AI Agentic Lab, we apply the principle of Governance by Design. An agentic environment does not consist of one model, but of a reasoning layer, an integration layer and robust Identity & Access Management (IAM). With explicit identities for agents, fine-grained access rights and extensive audit trails, we make sure AI is predictable, verifiable and responsible. Security, guardrails and sovereignty are of course part of this too.
From demo to digital colleague: Harmony Agentic Lab
In the coming years, many organisations will build AI agents. Some projects will remain impressive demos. Others will grow into a fundamental part of the business processes.
The difference is not determined by the model alone. It is determined by the quality of the integrations, the enterprise architecture, the governance and the ability to let AI work safely with people and systems.
That is exactly why we set up the AI Agentic Lab at Harmony: to help organisations take the step from experiment to production, and from AI tool to digital colleague.
Together we explore which processes offer the most potential, what architecture is needed to let agents work safely with existing systems, and which governance measures are required to keep risks manageable.
We don't focus on one-off demonstrations, but on concrete results:
- identifying and validating use cases;
- a business case and ROI estimate;
- architecture and integration blueprints;
- governance and security frameworks;
- working prototypes;
- a roadmap towards production.
The result is a structured programme that lets organisations grow in a controlled way from experiment to enterprise adoption.
Explore. Experiment. Accelerate.
Not to demonstrate AI, but to make AI actually work.
